Depicting gay men in the media

Gordon Allport, an influential psychologist, is often cited in scholarly research for his contact thesis — which, put simply, says that under the right conditions, interpersonal contact is one of the best ways to reduce prejudice between majority and minority groups. In addition, data on the mood of the subjects were collected and analyzed in light of Devine's model of prejudice. Camp can be defined as the purposeful and ironic adoption of stylistic elements that would otherwise be considered bad taste. This trend has not died out: The two gay characters are friends, not lovers, and they are rarely shown in romantic situations. To close gaps in tolerance and cultural change, movements and leaders must encourage various forms of media to tell more accurate stories about lesbian and gay people. Some individuals embody a struggle with adversity that strikes a chord with some members of the queer community such as Courtney Love, or Tammy Faye Messner.

In the United States and beyond, few shifts in public opinion have been as rapid and widespread as attitudes about lesbian women and gay men.
